Boring straight into the earth saves space and is good for retrofits, or homes without a large property. A typical vertical loop geothermal system will require four to six vertical bore holes.  Vertical loop geothermal is equally efficient to the horizontal earth systems, but generally, it is the most expensive due to the cost of drilling wells.
